Lampung, Indonesia – 26 November 2022. Lampung once again became the stage for Robusta coffee farmers as the province hosted the Robusta Coffee Farmers Appreciation 2022 (Apresiasi Petani Kopi Robusta). The fourth edition of this annual event brought together farmers, cooperatives, exporters, and industry partners to recognize farmer achievements, spotlight innovation, and encourage higher standards. Organized by PT Sulotco Jaya Abadi and PT Asia Makmur, with support from KAPPI Global and local institutions, the program reaffirmed Lampung’s role as one of Indonesia’s Robusta strongholds.

Four categories, one vision

This year’s appreciation highlighted four areas that matter most for Robusta farming today:

  • Taste and cup quality, celebrating beans with distinctive flavor.

  • Best-managed plantations, showing strong farm care and sustainability.

  • Innovation, recognizing farmers who introduced new approaches or developed unique clones.

  • Productivity pioneers, farmers who proved it is possible to achieve outstanding yields.

By covering everything from taste to productivity, the event reminded participants that quality Robusta is built not only in the cup but also in the way farms are managed and improved year after year.

Facing the realities of farming

While the atmosphere was appreciative, discussions at the event also reflected the realities facing many Robusta farmers. Productivity across Lampung is still inconsistent, with many farmers harvesting below 2 tons per hectare, while countries like Vietnam continue to set the benchmark much higher.

Farmers also spoke about the increasing pressure of climate change — unpredictable weather, heavy rains, and long dry spells that make drying beans more difficult. Many farmer groups still lack access to greenhouse or dome drying facilities, which are essential to ensure stable quality.

Inspiration through innovation

Yet within these challenges came stories of resilience and creativity. Farmers who experimented with new clones, adjusted post-harvest practices, or maintained exceptional plantations stood as examples of what is possible when knowledge and dedication come together.

Government representatives noted that downstream support for coffee shops and markets has improved, but that upstream investment — in planting materials, infrastructure, and extension services — is urgently needed.

Through its role as a sponsor, KAPPI Global supported the event’s focus on farmer innovation and productivity, aligning with its wider mission to empower farmers and prepare Indonesia’s coffee sector for global competitiveness.

Looking forward

The 2022 Robusta Coffee Farmers Appreciation was more than a moment of recognition — it was a reminder that Lampung’s Robusta sector is on a journey. Moving forward, organizers and stakeholders see a clear set of priorities:

  • Helping farmers consistently achieve and surpass 2 tons per hectare.

  • Expanding upstream support for post-harvest facilities and training.

  • Encouraging more farmer-led innovation in clone development and sustainable farming.

  • Inspiring the next generation to take part in coffee farming through education and training programs.

With collaboration across government, industry, and farmer communities — and the continued involvement of organizations like KAPPI Global — Robusta farmers in Lampung are showing they are ready to take on the challenges of a changing coffee landscape.
